As I’m writing this, over 50 people are dead in Vegas and already the fruitless cycle has started. There are liberals like me begging for gun control that will never come to pass (I can only look back at this post and laugh bitterly), and of course there is the troll opposition that mobilizes within SECONDS of any tragedy to dismiss those pleas and spread unverified news that will almost certainly become anchored in the wingnut consciousness. I already know it’s hopeless. I already know nothing will happen, and that the president will followup his standard on-his-best-behavior presser on this by insulting people and dedicating a golf trophy to the victims. Super dragon ball heroes download torrent rarbg. Bulma's voice was off. Just yesterday, the Los Angeles Times reported that Congress—already itself victimized by a deranged gunman—is looking into passing pro-gun legislation that makes it easier for people to buy and use silencers. They are doing this because, and this is true, they believe that silencers aren’t THAT silent, and that making silencers more accessible will be better for hunters’ hearing. So if a four-year-old shoots his brother with a muzzled revolver a year from now, you can at least take comfort in the fact that Donald Trump Jr. won’t get tinnitus from gunning down a bull moose while vacationing in the Yukon. Again, none of this is surprising. This isn’t like Newtown, where I figured something HAD to happen after school kids were slaughtered en masse—only to be both dismayed and horrified when it became clear that nothing would happen at all. I’m not that naïve anymore. I know the faulty logic of the good guy with a gun will persist, even though the bad guy with a gun almost always gets his licks in before the good guy can put him down. I already know you can’t sue gun manufacturers when their products kill people. I already know we'll endlessly parse the word 'terrorism' when a white dude commits a massacre on U.S. soil—even though guns themselves are a terror, and that to use one is to not only kill, but to leave bystanders like me hopeless and and scared and feeling unable to fight back in any effective form. If that’s not terrorism, I don’t know what is. I already know these companies are so deeply entrenched in both the government and the culture that you can’t even use a computer to track down a gun purchase. I already know that gun CEOs will get to remain coddled in a life of unbridled wealth and leisure, never in fear of proper confrontation. I already know I’m accomplishing exactly nothing by howling about this. I already know nothing will stop the next Vegas, or the next Pulse, or the next Oregon, a tragedy which I had legit forgotten about because honestly, who can keep track anymore? 'This is not a matter of mere division that can be solved with flying flags on your doorstep and linking arms for the anthem. This is brokenness. This is me hoping America stops happening to people.' Worst of all, I already know that what ails America right now—violence, racism, inequality, corruption, hatred—is not the work of just a few bad actors or fake Twitter bots. It is in America. It is an inherent-ness that has only really begun to be exposed in its depth and strength. It’s not a zit you can just pop. And the past two years have it crystal clear that a great many people will exhaust a great deal of energy working to keep that dark fabric intact. They’re winning, frankly. I don’t know how to overcome this. A lot of gun nuts and shitbags seem to have a great deal more energy than I do, and I am left feeling, after this kind of awful moment, as if America itself is simply a lost cause. This is not nihilism talking. As much as I enjoy ranting about sports bottles online, I swear I’m not some goth asshole who thinks everything is bad and nothing matters. I believe in the deep goodness of man, or at least I believe in its occasional emergence. But these are gray, miserable times, and even the hardiest patriot can be left to wonder what, exactly, the point of America is right now. I mean, I know what I want from America. I want freedom, peace, love, and prosperity for all. That's corny, but true. And I grew up believing that there was a real way to achieve such an idyll. I believed that America could get there. Maybe not in my lifetime, but perhaps one day in the distance, through the hard labor of history and social progress. But now.. I don't know. I used to think that civil discord came from people arguing about how to achieve those means, but I don’t have that sort of good faith anymore. I don’t think everyone shares that American ideal, especially not the man in charge of things at the moment. So I don’t quite know what the point of America is when so many of my countrymen seem to be interested only in winning and cruelty and adhering to a strict gospel of Zero Fucks Given, and the result is a string of perpetual grief for shooting victims and hurricane victims—victims of any stripe; victims whose lives are treated with contempt and indifference by those who believe the word “victim” is a mark of shame and weakness. This is not a matter of mere division that can be solved with flying flags on your doorstep and linking arms for the anthem. This is brokenness. This is me hoping America stops happening to people. This is me hoping to simply survive America rather than fix it. Because by now, I don't know what I can do to change the fundamental anatomy of America, to rid ourselves of the bugs that have revealed themselves to be features of the system. I will call and I will march but I’m under no illusions about the fact that doing those things may soothe me but not, ultimately, change what desperately needs to change. I have asked myself, on many occasions, what it will take—in terms of dead bodies, and pilfered tax money, and outright lies, and general human degradation—for this to end. I keep waiting for America to change. To 'pivot,' as it were. Instead, I am left with a broken heart and the realization that this version of our country, for so many, is the America they want: shattered and antagonistic, where everyone has a gun, where victims are collateral damage, where the right people are rich, and the wrong people are silenced either with poverty or death.
